Developmental vs Operational Value Streams
Understanding Value Streams and their place in an Agile organization
๐ Hello, Iโm Vibhor, and welcome to the ๐ subscriber-only edition ๐ of my weekly Training Series powered by Winning Strategy. Every week, I answer two reader questions and publish 2 posts about Agile Products, Role-Based Skills, and anything else that you need answered about your Career Growth. You can send me your questions here.
On to this weekโs question.
Q: Could you please create a series titled "Value Stream 101"? I just read your post on Value Stream Mapping, and it was fantastic. As someone new to this concept, I would like to know the differences between developmental and operational value streams, which I think you missed in the original post.
Thank you for the question.
For those who are new to Winning Strategy, the post referred to in the question is linked below:
Simplifying Value Stream Mapping for Agile/Scrum Teams
Creating a series on Value Streams called โValue Stream 101โ is a great idea.
The post "Simplifying Value Stream Mapping" (linked above) may seem somewhat advanced for those new to the concept, but it does provide the basics in small parts that were necessary to explain the โmappingโ portion of value streams.
However, I do agree!
The original post completely missed the distinction between Developmental and Operational Value Streams.
So this post will fill that gap by explaining (in very simple words):
What is a Value Stream?
Types of Value Streams
What is a Developmental Value Stream?
What is an Operational Value Stream
Why do we sometimes need multiple DVSs to serve a single OVS
You will know exactly what these are excluding all the jargon that comes packaged when we talk Value Streams.
