Let’s say you're in Spain (those who can’t speak Spanish…) and need directions to the nearest café.
You find a person on the street and ask,
“Uh... café? Go... where?”
The person might understand you, but you don’t know Spanish. So, their response (unless they know English) will likely be unclear or frustrating.
Now, let’s say you know just enough Spanish to ask:
“¿Dónde está el café más cercano?”
Suddenly, the conversation flows. You get clear directions …and maybe even a friendly smile.
That's exactly what's happening when most people try to communicate with AI.
They're speaking "human" …to a system that needs specific instructions in a particular way. They're pointing and gesturing with unclear prompts, getting frustrated when the AI doesn't understand…or worse, provide an output that they don’t want.
AI doesn’t magically understand what you mean.
It responds based on how well you "speak its language," i.e. the Prompt.
The better your prompts, the better your results.
In this post, you’ll learn the grammar that the AI understands. You will use this grammar to prompt AI to get your desired output.
Let’s get started.

I highly recommend downloading and using the Substack app. This will enable you to read the full newsletter without the length restrictions typically imposed by email clients like Gmail.
Furthermore, you will be promptly notified of the community chat discussions and educational notes I post regularly.
What is Prompt Engineering?
It is the set of rules and structures that help AI interpret your input.
I watch a lot of sports for fun and relaxation.
Don’t ask me the names of players. I don’t know their names. I just enjoy decoding the secret communication that happens between the players and their coaches.
The players already know how to play the game, but those signals give them specific instructions to make the right moves.
In the same way,
Prompt Engineering adds structure and clarity to your request, helping AI understand exactly what you're asking for.
