Quick question: Who should write user stories on an Agile team? If your gut reaction is “the Product Owner,” you’re spot on.

…except it is a myth!

I believed that, too… for a LONG time!

Yep!

Over time, with experience, I learned the truth.

Expecting the Product Owner to handle every user story is simply… NOT feasible.

I am quite certain you all (or most of you) have heard the phrase, “Writing user stories is a team sport.”

When developers, testers, and designers all pitch in, you get richer conversations and clearer requirements.

Plus, you also get a stronger sense of ownership.

  1. Why does this myth exist?

  2. What happens when we challenge it?

  3. And how do we fix it?

In this post, I am sharing different ways mature teams use to populate the Product Backlog and write user stories.

Let’s get started.
