👋 Hey Friends,
Last night, when I was scrolling through the notes of my journal, I came across an entry that surfaced a hidden gem.
Here's the backstory.
About 2 years ago, I reconnected with a childhood friend during his visit to Toronto. He was one of the toppers in the ICSE and ISC board exams in India back in 1997 and 1999.
We have been close friends since our childhood, back from the days of City Montessori School, where we studied together till our 12th standard.
He is quite successful in his own industry.
But when I met him he seemed a little upset. When I inquired he shared with me the pain that we all at some point feel in our lives.
It’s called “Career Stagnation.”
He was not seeing career growth.
This reminded me of something I learned from a senior back when I was at Twitter.
I call it the ECI Career Strategy.
E - Employee
C - Company
I - Industry
And this is what it suggests.
To do well in your career, the "growth rate" of the above 3 should be in the following order:
Employee Growth > Company Growth > Industry Growth
This means you need to learn new things and get better at your job (Employee Growth) faster than your company comes up with new ideas (Company Growth), and your company needs to be ahead of how fast your whole field evolves (Industry Growth).
This is an ideal situation to establish a successful career that grows exponentially. You climb higher in a company that's also climbing higher in its industry.
Think about being a rising star at Netflix back when it was still a new company.
If you’re worried about your career, check the order of ECI.
The worst order could be ICE.
Industry Growth > Company Growth > Employee Growth
If your company is not keeping up with the industry and you are not developing your skills, it can put you in a difficult position.
In such situations, you essentially have 2 options:
When the industry growth rate is faster than your company's growth rate, it's time to consider changing companies.
When your company's growth rate is faster than your personal growth rate, it's time to upgrade your skills.
It doesn’t matter which industry you belong to; this is what it takes to rise up.
Failure to do so results in “Career Stagnation.”

Quote of the Week
“Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life; dream of it; think of it; live on that idea. Let the brain, the body, muscles, nerves, every part of your body be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success.”
